Did Taiwan fans give Bon Jovi a bad name in China?

k Rocking a Chinese stadium has been Jon Bon Jovi's dream for a long time, but earlier this month Chinese authorities abruptly cancelled the American rock singer's China tour dates, reportedly because he featured the Dalai Lama in previous concerts. Sources have told the BBC that Taiwanese fans had sent the Chinese authorities pictures of those concerts, showing Bon Jovi singing on stage with images of the Tibetan spiritual leader as the backdrop. The move, it appears, was part of a concerted campaign aimed at getting Bon Jovi's China tour scuttled so that he could play more shows in Taiwan. Indeed, shortly after Beijing and Shanghai...

Collision course? Rise of China a stress for the US

j "The United States welcomes the rise of a China that is peaceful, stable, prosperous and a responsible player in global affairs." So said President Obama on Friday, standing alongside President Xi at the White House. This line didn't make the news. After all, Mr Obama repeats it whenever he meets his Chinese counterpart. But the qualified American welcome to the rise of China is still the principle which underpins the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and it is the principle which has guided American policy on China through eight presidencies and four decades. Never before in history has a great power risen so fast,...

Australia set to deny visa to US singer Chris Brown

u The US singer Chris Brown has been told he is unlikely to be given a visa to perform in Australia because of his record of domestic violence. France launches Syria anti-IS strikes

France has carried out its first air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria. The president's office said that French planes struck targets identified during reconnaissance missions conducted over the past fortnight. France co-ordinated with regional partners for the operation, a brief statement said. French jets have previously carried out air strikes against IS targets in neighbouring Iraq. "Our country thus confirms its resolute commitment to fight against the terrorist threat represented by Daesh," the French Presidency said, referring to the militant group by another of its acronyms. Syria's civil war explained "We will...

23 must-see photos from 1965 war

Most neutral historians agree that the 1965 India-Pakistan war ended in a stalemate; yet, both countries today claim to have delivered a crushing defeat on the other side. And while the debate over who won the war is likely to never be settled, we can agree that we owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers who gave their lives protecting our borders. Here, we look back at the some of the most intriguing pictures from the war that lasted almost 17 days. A local militia stand guard at a check post in Azad Kashmir (L), while on (R) a soldier firing from a trench at BRB Canal to stop the enemy from crossing the canal. On left Major General...
