Did Taiwan fans give Bon Jovi a bad name in China?

Rocking a Chinese stadium has been Jon Bon Jovi's dream for a long time, but earlier this month Chinese authorities abruptly cancelled the American rock singer's China tour dates, reportedly because he featured the Dalai Lama in previous concerts.
Sources have told the BBC that Taiwanese fans had sent the Chinese authorities pictures of those concerts, showing Bon Jovi singing on stage with images of the Tibetan spiritual leader as the backdrop.
The move, it appears, was part of a concerted campaign aimed at getting Bon Jovi's China tour scuttled so that he could play more shows in Taiwan. Indeed, shortly after Beijing and Shanghai dates were cancelled, he hastily added one more date for Taipei.
Wanted in Taiwan, dead or alive
Fans were apparently inspired by American rock band Maroon 5's experience with China. When Beijing recently cancelled their shows after one band member tweeted "Happy Birthday" to the Dalai Lama, the organiser added a concert in Taipei to recoup losses.
Taiwanese Bon Jovi fans were desperate. The band had scheduled only one concert in Taiwan on its Asia tour and tickets had sold out on the first day.
Collision course? Rise of China a stress for the US

"The United States welcomes the rise of a China that is peaceful, stable, prosperous and a responsible player in global affairs."
So said President Obama on Friday, standing alongside President Xi at the White House.
This line didn't make the news. After all, Mr Obama repeats it whenever he meets his Chinese counterpart. But the qualified American welcome to the rise of China is still the principle which underpins the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and it is the principle which has guided American policy on China through eight presidencies and four decades.
Never before in history has a great power risen so fast, and in so many different spheres, as the China we see today. In three short decades, the backwards farming nation of both presidents' childhoods has become the world's largest manufacturer and largest trader. It may overtake the US during President Xi's time in office to become the world's largest economy.
China's trade with the US alone has risen from $2bn in 1979, when relations were established, to nearly $600bn last year.
The relationship is broad and deep, marked by intense co-operation but also intense competition. Both presidents are conscious of the dangers of the former giving way to the latter.
The Thucydides trap
In his speech in Seattle, President Xi Jinping tackled the threat of the two nations' strategic rivalry head on:
"There is no such thing as the so-called Thucydides trap in the world. But should major countries time and again make the mistakes of strategic miscalculation, they might create such traps for themselves."
Thucydides trap? What was a 2,000-year-old Greek historian doing in a speech otherwise peppered with references to American writers and American culture?
The trap named after him describes the structural stress caused when a rapid rise - like China's - changes the balance of power with an established rival that escalates to war. The rising power wants a bigger say in how its world is managed and the existing power holds onto the status quo.
Thucydides identified it as the trend which led an up-and-coming Athens to war with Sparta in the 5th Century BC. It appeared in Mr Xi's speech nearly 2,500 years later because some strategic thinkers believe that what was true of Athens and Sparta is true of China and the US today.
In some ways the dangers are arguably greater today. Sparta and Athens were at least close in language and culture. Britain and Germany before the First World War also shared many values, and contemporaries could see that strategic competition was in the interests of neither and that war would be catastrophic. But that didn't mean they could prevent it.
Common ground
So as President Obama and President Xi performed the rituals of the visit, complete with 21-gun salute and state dinner, what both sides can agree on is the urgency of avoiding the Thucydides trap. Sustaining the US welcome for a rising China requires them to find and strengthen areas of co-operation.
Hence announcements on climate change, with President Obama welcoming President Xi's commitment to a carbon trading programme. They also celebrated co-operation on Iran's nuclear programme and said they would continue to work together to tackle the North Korean nuclear problem. China signed off on a multi-billion dollar deal to buy Boeing aircraft, making the point that there are concrete benefits in American jobs and profit from good relations with China.
President Xi worked hard to keep the tone positive. Chinese good manners dictate that on great ceremonial occasions, the visitor should avoid unpleasantness and find nice things to say about the host. So he reeled off a list of his favourite American authors and movies. But when President Xi goes to Russia he loves Pushkin and Tolstoy, when he goes to France it's Moliere and Dumas.
Beneath the feel-good flattery, the unspoken message was one of inexorable Chinese power. President Obama did manage to extract an agreement that both governments would refrain from cyber-theft of intellectual property for commercial gain, and that they would work on "international rules of the road for appropriate conduct in cyberspace".
But he also wondered aloud whether words would be followed by actions, and warned that he might still impose sanctions if Chinese hacking persisted. President Xi denies that China has perpetrated any hacking, insisting instead that it is the victim of cyber hacking. On tensions in the South China Sea, they made no progress.
Hardnosed diplomacy
Overall, the Obama administration tried to put a brave face on the usefulness of this summit, but it is the third major encounter in three years between the two presidents and the relationship has not lived up to early American hopes. President Obama has invested heavily in trying to build a personal rapport, and on this occasion too they had a two-hour conversation over a private dinner. But one is seven years into his presidency with just a year to go, the other is three years in with seven still ahead.
President Xi's foreign policy is more confident, articulate and focused than that of any of his predecessors. His assertiveness has caught the Obama administration off guard, whether it's the ambitious island building in the South China Sea, a new development bank to challenge US dominance of global financial institutions, or the push to reshape the physical and diplomatic architecture of Asia through China's "One Belt One Road" strategy.
The inescapable conclusion is that President Xi has made a hardnosed calculation that his counterpart is too preoccupied with American problems in the Middle East and Russia to push back against his own muscular version of the way China should rise.

Hajj stampede: Iran's Khamenei calls for Saudi apology

Iran's supreme leader has called on Saudi Arabia to apologise for Thursday's deadly stampede during the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's remarks came after a speech by President Hassan Rouhani at the UN in which he called for an investigation.
Saudi Arabia has accused Iran of playing politics with a tragedy.
At least 769 people died in the crush, more than 140 of them from Iran.
It was the deadliest incident to hit the Hajj in 25 years.
The crush occurred on Thursday morning as two large groups of pilgrims converged at right angles as they took part in the Hajj's last major rite - stone-throwing at pillars called Jamarat, where Satan is believed to have tempted the Prophet Abraham.
"This issue will not be forgotten and the nations will pursue it seriously," Ayatollah Khamenei said.
"Instead of accusing this and that, the Saudis should accept the responsibility and apologise to the Muslims and the victims' families
Australia set to deny visa to US singer Chris Brown

The US singer Chris Brown has been told he is unlikely to be given a visa to perform in Australia because of his record of domestic violence.
The singer is scheduled to go on tour in Australia in December, and tickets are due to go on sale on Monday.
He now has 28 days to appeal.
In 2009, Chris Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, the pop star Rihanna. He has toured Australia twice since, but the government is under pressure to refuse him this time.
Australia's immigration department has issued a "notice of intention to consider refusal", Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said.
The singer has 28 days to present a case as to why he should be granted a visa, after which a final decision will be made.
Minister for Women Michaelia Cash, who was until recently assistant immigration minister, had urged Mr Dutton to take a stand on the issue.
"People need to understand, if you are going to commit domestic violence and you want to travel around the world, there are going to be countries that say to you, 'You cannot come in because you are not of the character that we expect in Australia'", Senator Cash said.
The decision about Brown's visa follows the government's decision earlier this year to refuse a visa for world champion boxer Floyd Mayweather on similar grounds.
Mayweather had been booked for dinner and nightclub appearances in Sydney and Melbourne in January.
New Zealand has already ruled that Brown is unsuitable for entry into the country.

France launches Syria anti-IS strikes

France has carried out its first air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria.
The president's office said that French planes struck targets identified during reconnaissance missions conducted over the past fortnight.
France co-ordinated with regional partners for the operation, a brief statement said.
French jets have previously carried out air strikes against IS targets in neighbouring Iraq.
"Our country thus confirms its resolute commitment to fight against the terrorist threat represented by Daesh," the French Presidency said, referring to the militant group by another of its acronyms.
"We will strike each time that our national security is at stake," the statement added.
President Francois Hollande announced earlier this month that he was preparing to send jets to Syria, beginning with a period of reconnaissance to identify targets. He said at the time that terror attacks had been planned against France from Syria.
A US-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against IS in Syria and Iraq for more than a year.
France, like the UK, has previously confined its air strikes against the Islamic State group to Iraqi airspace.
The UK announced earlier this month it had carried out a drone strike against two British citizens in Syria but has yet to fly manned operations in Syrian airspace.
More than 200,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war since 2011. Approximately four million have fled abroad, with many attempting to enter the EU.
France's announcement comes as UK Prime Minister David Cameron is expected to drop his demand that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad be removed from power to secure peace in the country.
Mr Cameron is expected to make the concession at the United Nations meeting in New York this week in order to secure support in the fight against IS from Russia, an ally of Mr Assad.

Most neutral historians agree that the 1965 India-Pakistan war ended in a stalemate; yet, both countries today claim to have delivered a crushing defeat on the other side.
And while the debate over who won the war is likely to never be settled, we can agree that we owe a debt of gratitude to the soldiers who gave their lives protecting our borders.
Here, we look back at the some of the most intriguing pictures from the war that lasted almost 17 days.

On the Song Exploder podcast, host Hrishikesh Hirway talks to musicians who take apart their songs and, piece by piece, tell the stories of how they were made. Listen below. The members of rock band American Football came together in 1997 as students at the University of Illinois, and released only one album and an EP before breaking up three years later. The group’s critically acclaimed debut went on to achieve cult status as one of the most influential records of the ’90s, and was reissued as a deluxe double-LP last year. In this episode, Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes, and Steve Lamos of American Football break down the first song they wrote together, “The One with the Tambourine,” from their self-titled EP. They talk about being influenced by the Chicago music scene of the ’90s, and how they combined alternative tunings, unconventional time signatures, and naiveté to craft their sound.
